    Advanced Rod Building Classes
These classes focus primarily on one area.  Students are welcome to ask questions about any other area of rod building.

    Butt Wraps - 2 hrs
How to layout and wrap open and closed wraps, diamond patterns, chevrons, American flags, and simple weaves.

Handle Construction Techniques - 3 hrs
Rod handles, reel seats, and grips can be made from a wire range of materials.  Learn how to build a cork butt and fore grip.  Learn how to turn
hardwood handles and reel seats, learn how to "flock" a handle.  Learn to create trim rings and how to tie it all together to create a
    masterpiece.

    Fly Rod Construction - 2hrs
Fly rods a very simple to build but require some serious forethought by the builder.  Learn what handles styles work best in what conditions.
Learn what's different (and the same) between a 13wt and a 3wt.  Learn how to spec out a travel rod and what you need to do as a builder to
    keep if from failing.

    Offshore Rod Construction
No other fishery can stress tackle (and anglers) like a Wahoo burning off 300 yards of 50lb test in less than 60 seconds.  Anyone that has ever
endured a battle with a fish lasting more than an hour knows that crappy tackle won't do.  This class will teach you how to build rods that will
look good and function even better.  Learn about Unit-buts and roller guides and how to space them.  We'll also teach you how to under wrap
your guides, layout your grips, and center your gimbles.  We'll also cover the IGFA guidelines for fishing rods to ensure your record catch is
    approved.

Fly Tying
A great way to save money (if you're a fly fisherman) is to tie your own flies.  It also offers you the ability to truly match-the-hatch.  Captain Ed offers
both beginning and intermediate fly tying courses.  Course should be booked for a minimum of two hours and practical hands-on is a big part of the
course.

Beginning Fly Tying - 3 hours
The beginner will be able to tie most saltwater patterns because the techniques taught in class are common to most saltwater fly patterns.
    10 minutes - Introductions
20 minutes - Materials - bucktails, mylar, thread, glues, body materials, capes,
                      necks, hackle
20 minutes - hooks and tools
    20 minutes - Martins Pilchard
    20 minutes - Clouser Minnow
    20 minutes - Crazy Charlie
    20 minutes - Epoxy Crab
    20 minutes - Deceiver
    20 minutes - Cockroach
20 minutes - Keys Tarpon Fly

The following classes can also be arranged simply by calling Capt. Ed.

Fly Casting
Fly casting is a beautiful sport that can take minutes to learn and a lifetime to master.  We can teach you basic techniques like roll casting, striping
and how to set the hook.  We teach you little things like why form is so important when trying to cast a tight loop.  We can also cover more advanced
techniques like double hauling, leader construction, or back casting.

Seamanship (Boat Handling)
Captain Ed handles Seamanship in two basic ways; classroom, on the water, or both.  I highly recommend both courses if you are new to boating.

    Classroom
Capt. Ed will discuss safety, chart reading, rules of the road, piloting, reading the water, weather, trailering, docking, anchoring, tides, and so
on.  We'll spend time covering these topics so that you feel more confident and safe around the water.  The classes are tailored to your needs
so we can be as advanced or basic as necessary.

On the water (your boat or mine)
Capt. Ed will discuss all of the items listed above and provide hands-on lessons with you at the helm.  We can cover things such as trailering,
docking, anchoring and running in a variety of sea conditions.  We can also run the surrounding areas to familiarize you with the various
routes, landmarks, sea conditions, and traffic patterns unique to South West Florida.

Kayak Fishing
Kayak fishing is hot.  It's a great way to get on the water in a very affordable and eco-friendly way.  But it can be a little intimidating or even dangerous
if you don't know what you are doing.  We'll cover safety equipment (and it's use), kayak set-up, launching, kayak handling, transporting, navigation,
and how to land fish (safely).
